Simplicity of design and elegance of form typifies the work of Japanese born Sori Yanagi. Borrowing plywood molding techniques developed by Charles and Ray Eames, Yanagi has given us the iconic Butterfly Stool. Constructed of 2 identical maple plywood elements held together with a brass stretcher and 2 screws under the seat, this low stool has been manufactured by the Tendo Co. Ltd. In Japan since 1956.
The Butterfly Stool is a fusion of Eastern aesthetic and Western interior design. Personally, I have always been uncomfortable with the name of this object. Certainly, I see the obvious similarity with that most beautiful of fluttering insects. However, when I look upon my Yanagi stool, I am transported to a Shinto shrine with its imposing torii (portals) and I see the Kanji symbols of Japanese calligraphy.

Hi there,
I found out about you blog through your brother—you have beautiful chairs. I am also a design and art lover and I’m quite sure that you know the store called Latitude Nord located at 4410 boul. St-Laurent—they sale only originals and you should ask to see their many catalogues—they have a vast array of chairs to choose from. Also if you enjoy one of a kind functional art you could always plan a trip to Chicago ((fall) or New York (spring) for the sofa show. Here is their link https://www.sofaexpo.com/
Cheers,
Maxine
